Helping users to visualize global cuisines

Project Details

The Problem

People often face difficulties ordering dishes at restaurants foreign to their everyday palette.

In most cases, the lack of ability in visualizing foreign dishes and not knowing their ingredients steers people away from those dishes despite how delicious they can be. This ultimately hurts the restaurants’ business as well.

Business Objective

For international restaurants to increase their local customers

Project Goal

To help people to understand international cuisines to get to know the dishes and to match their palette

User Interviews | Desk Research | Competitor Research

I interviewed six individuals and the nearly unanimous consensus is that each individual struggles when trying to decide which dish they would order at foreign restaurants.

Furthermore, there has yet to be any defining application or technology that helps solve this problem. What I have learned from user interviews – when ordering foreign cuisines, it is important to have:

1. Information on nutrient facts and potential allergens

2. Photo images of the food

3. Language translation

Persona | User Journey Map

My target market focus is young and professional adults, and their most common experiences and pain points include difficulties in ordering foods at foreign restaurants. This is where we can help improve their experience.

Low-Fi Sketch | FOODIE AR

From various of research, we conduct a brainstorm session on how to solve this issue. Then, we created a Low-Fidelity sketch along with the features to be able to help the users.

Mid-Fidelity Sketch | Wireframe | User Testing

We conducted User Testing sessions from our Mid-Fidelity sketch and have learned that it is better to focus on the application’s ability to extract and display accurate information on various foods from different cuisines rather than other features we thought to venture such as a 'Reservation' feature.

From here, we updated our design and simplified the process by removing the 'Reservation' feature. Then, we kept the features that users like such as:

1. Accurately displayed a 3D visualization of the dish in addition to the ability to interact with it

2. Users were able to read the food's description and nutrient facts, as well as to pick the language of their choice

Prototyping

Coding

We used Maya 3D software to build the food objects and Unity to build the UI system. Then, we used Vuforia software and XCode. You can find the video here.

Our goal is for users to be able to interact with the dish, pick their preferred language, and read the food's description and nutrient facts.

The Challenge

We learned that technology implementation is the biggest hurdle to this project. Fortunately, this project was developed by a team with different sets of expertise.

Next Step

Receive users feedback, continue to improve the User Experience and User Interface of the design.
